Matt Keene
Growing up in rural Central Florida, I developed a strong passion for Florida's wild, natural places. Whether it was searching for a new fishing hole in pastures dotted with ancient Live oaks, camping on top of a blanket of pine needles, or canoeing on the lily-pad covered lakes and crystal-clear rivers that wind throughout the state, I loved disappearing into the woods. And I still seek out those places far from roads and buildings, only my ventures have taken me further away from my home. In 2007 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, hiking 2,175 miles in just under 5 months.
The AT sparked a fire inside of me for long-distance adventures. Less than a year and a half later, I began an expedition throughout Florida called The Sunshine Expedition, paddling over 1500 miles around the state and hiking an additional 1300 miles on the Florida Trail. I became the first person to paddle the entire length of the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail, paddling the entire perimeter of Florida. Indian River Outfitters has given me an opportunity to pass on some of that knowledge I've gained on my trips, and I'm excited to meet new local paddlers and hikers, and swap stories on and off the trails.
